Me and two classmates went into Brighton to get more use out of the different microphones. This was to gain more experience and knowledge of them and to grow confidence when using them. We use the hydrophone in the sea which made some really interesting sizzling noises which sounded like bacon cooking. We then walked through the lanes with the sennheiser recording ambient sound.
Using the Hydrophone:

- Today we were recording sounds in our class room using contact microphones and hydrophones. These both captures effects more so than a normal mic would. For example the hydrophone is a microphone designed to be used underwater for recording or listening to underwater sound. Whereas the contact mic is a form of microphone that senses audio vibrations through contact with solid objects. Unlike normal air microphones, contact microphones are almost completely insensitive to air vibrations but transduce only structure-borne sound. Often used as acoustic leakage probes, they also enjoy wide usage by noise music artists experimenting with sound. Contact microphones based on piezo materials are passive and high-impedance, which can make them sound 'tinny' without a matching preamp. (Fromhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_microphone). We attached the contact mic to a telephone, speaker, projector and mobile phone which all created strange buzzing noises which could be interesting for a horror or thriller.
Synchronous sound - visual and audio matching up. Diegetic and non diegetic - sound in films are termed diegetic if it is part of the narrative sphere of the film. External sound = non diegetic, internal sound = diegtic.
^ etc. Voiceover and soundtrack.
^ aka off camera commentary. Symbolic sound - adds to the narrative. Direct sound - recording sound at the same time as the image. Looping - an actors voice snycing with lip movements which are not the original sound. Dubbing - when you turn one language into another. Bridge - a passage linking two scenes either by connecting music across the transition or by beginning the sound of the next scene over images of the previous scene. Wild sound - separate from the images. Sound motif. - a sound effect or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation, idea through the film.
Soundtrack dialogue, musical score, narration, and sound effects.
- In our first session we went out with the sennheiser K6 and marantz to record sounds around campus. This was a good introduction to the
equipment as we could go back to class if we had any problems with it. We recorded cars, footsteps,
tree rustles, wind and people talking. When we got back to the class room we renamed all the clips
appropriately and got rid of all the ones we didn't need.
INDEPENDENT STUDY -
- 2 FILM CLIPS WHICH COULD MAKE FOR AN INTERESTING SOUND DESIGN
- 23 secs to 37 secs
- Synchronus sound
- Diegetic
- Music based.
- Horror sounds can be interesting as you can use anything and everything to create simple sounds. Also when putting them into Audition you can mix and twist them to sound creepy and ghostly.
